Polyurethane Foam Lifting in Duluth, MN

Also called polyjacking or foam jacking: a two-component polymer injected through dime-sized ports that expands, fills the void, and raises the slab.

How foam lifting works

Two liquid components meet in a heated gun and react on the way into the void under your slab. The reaction expands the material and generates lift. We drill 5/8-inch ports — roughly dime to nickel size — and inject in controlled bursts while watching the slab with a level. Void fills first; once the space under the concrete is packed, additional material starts moving the panel. The operator stops when the seam reads flush.

The structural foam used for slab lifting typically has a density around two pounds per cubic foot. That sounds light, and that's the point — a cubic foot of the sand-and-cement slurry used in mudjacking weighs on the order of a hundred pounds. On soil that already failed to carry the load, adding very little weight matters.

Why it fits the Northland

  • It cures in under an hour. Most slabs are back in service the same visit — you can park on the driveway, walk the sidewalk, drive into the garage.
  • It works in cool, damp conditions. The reaction isn't dependent on drying out, so it performs in the wet spring subgrade that's normal here after 90 inches of snow melts off.
  • The season is short. With Duluth's daily high below freezing an average of 106 days a year, a method that doesn't need days of cure time meaningfully extends the window when work can happen.
  • It's closed-cell and doesn't wash out. Cured polyurethane doesn't absorb water and won't erode when spring melt perches on the clay till underneath the way loose soil does.
  • Small ports, small patches. On a visible front walk, a stamped patio, or a finished basement floor, 5/8-inch grouted ports are far less conspicuous than 1-inch ones.

Where we recommend it

Foam is our default on sidewalks and front steps, interior garage and basement floors, decorative or stamped concrete, and any job where the surface has to be usable immediately. It's also the better choice when the underlying soil is weak enough that added weight is a real concern — a common situation on the loamy-over-clay-till profile the USDA "Duluth" soil series describes.

The honest trade-off: cost

Foam costs more per square foot than mudjacking. Typical ranges run about $5–25 per square foot for polyurethane versus about $3–8 per square foot for slurry. In job terms: a run of sidewalk sections commonly lands $650–2,700 with foam against $320–650 with mud, and a full driveway commonly runs $3,200–7,500 with foam against $1,500–3,000 with mud. Both are well under the roughly $6–15 per square foot that removal and replacement costs.

That premium buys speed, lighter loading, smaller holes and better performance in wet conditions. On a large outdoor slab with decent soil and no rush, it isn't always worth paying — mudjacking may be the smarter spend. What foam can't fix

Lifting is for intact concrete that lost its support. It doesn't repair badly spalled or crumbling surfaces, it doesn't rebuild a slab broken into many pieces, and it doesn't stop water from returning. If a downspout is discharging next to the slab or a grade is pitched toward the house, the void will re-form.
