What mudjacking is

Mudjacking — also called slabjacking, and sometimes just concrete raising — pumps a slurry of sand, cement and water through holes drilled in the slab. The slurry flows into the void underneath, packs it out, and then hydraulic pressure from the pump raises the concrete back to grade. Ports are larger than in foam work, around one inch, because the material is thick and heavy and needs a wider path.

Once the lift is complete, ports are patched with grout. The slurry cures over roughly one to three days, during which the slab should carry light foot traffic only. Vehicle traffic waits until cure is done — which is the main scheduling difference between this and foam.

Why it still makes sense in the Twin Ports

Cost is the honest headline. Mudjacking typically runs about $3–8 per square foot against roughly $5–25 per square foot for polyurethane foam. On job-sized numbers: a full driveway commonly lands around $1,500–3,000 with slurry versus $3,200–7,500 with foam, and individual sidewalk sections around $320–650 versus $650–2,700. Both come in well under the roughly $6–15 per square foot that tear-out and replacement runs, and leveling generally lands 50–70% below replacement overall.

There's a second argument beyond price. The slurry is a dense, cementitious material that fills large voids economically. On a big outdoor slab with a substantial gap underneath — a long driveway run, a wide apron, a detached garage floor — filling that volume with foam gets expensive fast, while slurry does it at a fraction of the material cost.

Where mudjacking is the right choice

  • Large outdoor flatwork where a per-square-foot premium adds up: long driveways, big aprons, wide walks.
  • Slabs with large voids to fill rather than fine, precise lifts to make.
  • Jobs with good access for the pump and hose, and reasonable weather during the cure window.
  • Budget-driven projects where the slab is sound and the timeline is flexible.

Where we'd steer you to foam instead

  • Weak subgrade. Slurry is heavy. Where the soil that already failed can't be asked to carry more, the roughly two-pound-per-cubic-foot density of polyurethane foam is the safer bet.
  • Interior and decorative slabs. One-inch ports are noticeable on a stamped patio or a finished basement floor; 5/8-inch ports are much easier to live with.
  • Late-season and wet conditions. Slurry needs above-freezing temperatures and time to cure. With Duluth's daily high below freezing an average of 106 days a year, that window closes early.
  • Immediate use. If the driveway has to hold a vehicle tonight, foam is the answer.

Does mudjacking last in freeze-thaw country?

A properly placed slurry lift lasts as long as the soil beneath it stays stable — which is the same qualifier that applies to foam. Neither material stops frost. Around 42 freeze-thaw cycles a year, 90 inches of annual snow, and firm clay till at 20–35% clay that perches meltwater directly under the slab will keep working on any concrete in this region. That's why we seal joints after every lift and talk through downspout extensions and grading before we leave. Fixing the height without addressing the water just buys time.
